In the twelfth season of the Architecture Speaks! lecture series, organized jointly by Aalto University and the Architecture & Design Museum, Professor and Head of Department Jenni Reuter invites seven speakers to share insights into their design processes and their roles in the world of architecture. The theme of this season is Local Memory.

Buildings carry memory through their materials, construction techniques, traces of use, and relationship to place. By reusing and adapting existing buildings, fragments, local materials, and techniques, architecture can continue rather than erase history, allowing different time periods to coexist. This approach can preserve and strengthen the social, ecological, and cultural values of the built environment while revealing its hidden potential. Architecture thus becomes an expression of collective responsibility and ecological awareness, connecting past, present, and future.

Dominik Campanella

Seiler Linhart Architects, based in Lucerne and Sarnen, is a regionally rooted practice founded in 2001. Their work combines tradition and modernity through a holistic understanding of architecture as “Baukunst” – the art of building – integrating artistic, cultural, constructive and technical aspects. Each project begins with a thorough analysis of its context, programme and users.

A central aim is longevity, from spatial organisation and construction to material selection and detailing. The architects favour robust materials such as wood, stone, metal and plaster, while innovative construction techniques reinterpret regional traditions. Their architecture combines functionality, technical precision and poetic expression.

Dominik Campanella

Dominik Campanella is the Co-Founder of restado and Concular. restado is the largest marketplace for reclaimed construction materials in Europe. Concular is going one step further: It created a digital ecosystem for circular construction. These startups help to fight the climate change in the construction industry that is responsible for 40% of GHG emissions. Before founding these startups, Dominik studied Computer Science and Management and worked several years for Google.

Helga Blocksdorf

After graduating from the University of the Arts Berlin in 2001, Helga Blocksdorf acquired in-depth experience in construction management, execution planning and competitions at Staab Architekten (2002–2007), Berlin. Between 2001 and 2013 she was part of the artist collective après-nous, which held international exhibitions and staged installations in cities such as Copenhagen, Berlin and New York. From 2007 to 2102 she held the position of guest professor of constructive design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and worked as a research assistant in the team headed by Prof. Ute Frank at the TU Berlin. Since 2013 she founded the office Helga Blocksdorf/Architektur in Berlin. In 2021 she was appointed professor and head of the Institute for Construction at the TU Braunschweig. In 2025 she obtained her doctorate as part of the Programme for Design-Based Doctorates (Programm Entwurfsbasierte Promotion, PEP) at the TU Berlin.

Jonas Janke

Jonas Janke (DE, 1991) is an architect and partner at bplus.xyz. He studied architecture in Hamburg, Stockholm and Berlin and was part of team 2038 for the German Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. He has taught and lectured at universities and institutions across Europe, including ETH Zurich and Politecnico di Milano.

His work focuses on ecological construction, adaptive reuse and transformation, with an emphasis on pragmatic solutions, thoughtful use of materials and architecture as a means of conveying ideas and advancing new approaches to the built environment.

08014

08014 is a Barcelona-based architecture practice founded in 2018 and led by Adrià Guardiet and Sandra Torres. Their work across architecture, public space and landscape is characterised by precision, site-specific design and research into typology, materials, technology and environmental impact.

In 2023, 08014 was recognised at the AR Emerging Awards as one of fifteen emerging international architecture practices of the year. Their work has received recognition in numerous competitions and awards and has been featured at events including the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Venice Architecture Biennale. Their projects have also been published in leading architecture magazines such as Architectural Review, El Croquis, Arquitectura Viva and Detail. Alongside their practice, the studio’s members teach architecture at universities in Spain and Switzerland.

Positioning is an international symposium bringing together curators, artists and cultural practitioners to explore curatorial learning, knowledge production and curatorial practices. Extending across the Nordic-Baltic region and beyond, the event is organised in collaboration with a network of art and cultural organisations. Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki is one of the symposium’s partners in Helsinki.

The symposium is organised by PUBLICS, a curatorial and contemporary art commissioning agency based in Vallila, Helsinki, with a dedicated library, exhibition space and event space. PUBLICS commissions and curates contemporary art programmes, events and new artistic work.

Positioning

Positioning: A Symposium on Curatorial Learning in the Nordic-Baltic Region & Beyond is the second in a series of four annual, interconnected symposia organised as part of The Centre for Curatorial Thinking programme. The series spans Curatorial Thinking, Learning, Instituting and Collaborating, exploring the importance of public discourse across Finland, the Nordic-Baltic region and beyond. This second symposium collectively reflects on the relationship between learning, curatorial thinking, exhibitionary practices and discourses of the curatorial.

Since the establishment and expansion of curatorial courses in the early 1990s, there has been extensive discussion around different approaches to curatorial education and knowledge production, as well as the forms of learning that may have a lasting impact on curatorial practice, discourse and histories.

Positioning considers the specific modes of curatorial thinking-as-learning taking place across the ever-expanding contemporary curatorial field and how they are enabled by diverse forms of education.

Positioning brings together past and present approaches, knowledges and critiques within curatorial practices. In doing so, the symposium creates a space for dialogue between local and international contemporary art scenes and their practitioners, generating new opportunities for artists, curators and cultural workers in the Nordic-Baltic region.

The symposium will take place in the auditorium (1st floor) at Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki on 24 September, from 2:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Admission is free with advance registration. The event is fully booked, and registration is currently closed.

The beloved Moomins, created by Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson (1914–2001), have become cultural icons in Finland and beyond. Jansson originally envisioned Moominvalley as a safe haven in turbulent times. Escape to Moominvalley explores how Jansson perceived architecture and design in her own life and how these elements are reflected in the stories of Moominvalley.
