Situations: The Architecture & Design Museum in Context

As the Architecture & Design Museum plans for its new home on the South Harbour, it has a unique opportunity to consider the different scales and contexts in which it will operate. How will the Museum engage with the South Harbour neighborhood, with Helsinki, as a national museum in Finland, as a Nordic/Baltic institution, across Europe and around the world?

Situations is the Museum’s public program at Eteläranta 6. The program explores these different scales of engagement with a diverse group of collaborators, asking how the Museum might contribute at each level, and what it might learn during this period before the new building opens.

The Situations programme takes shape through different formats. Starting with Community Residence and Open Podcast Studio.

Community Residency

The Community Residency is a free-to-use space at Eteläranta 6 for Helsinki-based collectives, associations, community groups, and working groups working with architecture, design, cities, and the built environment. The program supports gathering, collaboration, learning, and experimentation in a central location. Through selected organizers, the space will host workshops, discussions, teaching, and collaborative projects that connect urban questions with everyday experiences.

Open Podcast Studio

The Open Podcast Studio is a public platform for conversations about architecture, design, cities, and the future of Eteläranta. Live recordings invite audiences to participate in discussions that make urban development more accessible and engaging. The program launches in collaboration with New Academy Radio, whose curated series will establish the studio as a space for dialogue, storytelling, and knowledge exchange about Finnish architecture.

Please note that the historic Art Nouveau space is not barrier free. There are stairs leading to the venue as well as within the venue itself. The multi-level space does not have a lift.

Juhani Pallasmaa’s Reference Library

Eteläranta 6 is home to architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s reference library. Pallasmaa has donated his entire library to the museum’s collections, and a vast selection can now be explored at Eteläranta 6. The library space also features art and objects from the Architecture & Design Museum’s collections.
