Studio utopias and retreats: Tove Jansson and architecture

The artist and creator of the Moomin stories, Tove Jansson (1914–2001), is known as an artist who mastered many art forms with great skill. Studies have been written about her as a writer, illustrator and painter,
and more recently also about the role music played in her life and work. It makes one wonder: was there any art form that Jansson hadn’t tried her hand at?

What about architecture? What was Jansson’s relationship with architecture? Did the versatile and curious Jansson extend her repertoire to this field as well? Co-curator of the Escape to Moominvalley exhibition Jutta Tynkkynen set out to explore this question when she began her research for the exhibition which opened at the Architecture and Design Museum Helsinki in October 2025. This article is the result of that work.
