Arrival
Tram line 10 serves the museum. There is a tram stop called “Johanneksenkirkko” on Yrjönkatu in front of the museum.
You can also reach the museum by bus.
There is a frame‑lock bicycle parking stand in the triangle area in front of the museum. There is a bicycle rack in the museum’s backyard. There is a city bike station at the corner of the museum.
Main Entrance – Korkeavuorenkatu 23
On arrival, there are 5 stone steps up from the street to the door: the first step is 11 cm high and the others are 17 cm high. The staircase is 280 cm wide. There is a metal handrail on both sides at a height of 82 cm.
The door handle is at a height of 80 cm. The outer door is heavy to open. The doorway is 100 cm wide, or 200 cm when both doors are open.
The doorbell is on the right side of the staircase on a separate grey metal stand at a height of 108 cm.
In the entrance area there is a staircase leading to the foyer: the step height is 16 cm and the staircase is 220 cm wide. There are wooden handrails on both sides at a height of 120 cm.
Before the foyer there is a doorway that is at least 72 cm wide, or 260 cm when fully open. There is a 2 cm threshold at the door.
Accessible Entrance – Ullanlinnankatu 4
Before the outer door there is a 6 m long descending concrete ramp with a gradient of 16 degrees, followed by a landing and another 6 m ramp with a gradient of 12 degrees. The ramps have continuous metal handrails on both sides at a height of 90 cm. At its narrowest, the ramp is 107 cm wide.
Instead of the ramp, you can also reach the door via a concrete staircase with 5 steps, each 16 cm high. The staircase has a metal handrail on the left side when approaching, at a height of 85 cm. The staircase is 113 cm wide.
The door is locked. The doorbell is on the right side of the door on a separate metal stand at a height of 114 cm. Using the doorbell, you can ask staff to open the door and you will be assisted into the public areas. The outer doorway is 85 cm wide, or 137 cm when fully open. After the entrance door there is a vestibule with a doorway 97 cm wide, or 147 cm when fully open. After the vestibule there is a descending ramp with a gradient of 8 degrees. At its narrowest, the ramp is 100 cm wide. The ramp has metal handrails on both sides at a height of 85 cm.
Lift
The lift doorways are 120 cm wide. The call button is at a height of 108–115 cm. The doors open automatically. The lift floor measures 140 x 235 cm. The highest floor button used by visitors is at a height of 130 cm. The lift provides access to floors 0, 1 and 2. The lift has a capacity of 1000 kg and is designed for 13 persons. The lift has an alarm button and a voice connection to the service center.
Ground Floor (1st Floor) Lobby
There is an information desk at a height of 100 cm, without knee clearance. The foyer has lockers and coat racks. There is a bench at a height of 45 cm and various other seating. There is a map and exhibition information in the foyer. Museum staff are available to assist you.
There are unattended coat racks and lockable lockers. The lockers operate with a self‑selected code.
Foldable, portable stools are available to borrow in the public areas.
Stairs from the foyer to the 2nd floor
There are two staircases at opposite ends of the foyer leading to the second floor. Each staircase has 17 steps, a landing, and then a further 13 steps. The staircase width is 170 cm and the step height is 15 cm. There are metal handrails on both sides at a height of 75 cm.
Stairs from the foyer to floor 0
From the foyer you can descend to the ground floor via stairs with 20 steps. The step height is 15–22 cm. The staircase is 150 cm wide. There are metal handrails on both sides at a height of 85 cm.
Lecture hall, 1st floor
The doorway is 127 cm wide. There is a 3 cm threshold at the door. The door is usually locked and is opened during public events. There is no induction loop in the lecture hall or elsewhere in the museum building.
Shop, 1st floor
The doorway is 128 cm wide. There is a 4 cm threshold. The door is open during shop opening hours. The selection varies.
Taito Cafe, 1st floor
The doorway is 80 cm wide, or 129 cm when fully open. The door is open during cafe opening hours. The passage width is at least 128 cm. The buffet table is 90 cm high and does not have knee clearance.
The furniture varies. The café offers soups, salads and café products.
Exhibition space, 1st floor
The space is accessible: hard flooring, no thresholds or doors. The passage width is at least 128 cm. There is a fixed bench at a height of 42 cm and various other seating. The layout and contents vary.
Main exhibition space, 2nd floor
The space is accessible: hard flooring, no thresholds or doors. Doorways to rooms are 127 cm wide. There are benches and stools at a height of 45 cm and other movable furniture. Some seating has backrests and armrests.
Gallery, floor 0
The doorway is 205 cm wide. There is a 3 cm threshold. The sliding door is open during exhibitions. There is varied seating in the space.
Studio, floor 0
The doorway is 82 cm wide, or 170 cm when fully open. There are chairs with backrests at a height of 43 cm and movable tables that are 73 cm high, with 70 cm of knee clearance underneath.
Toilet facilities, floor 0
The narrowest point in the corridor is 132 cm.
Men’s toilet
There is a door with an 80 cm wide opening. There are 2 toilets, each 43 cm high, and 2 urinals at a height of 70 cm. The cubicles are lockable. The sink height is 80 cm and the toilet paper holder is at 70 cm. The paper towel bin is at a height of 100 cm.
Women’s toilet
There is a door with an 80 cm wide opening. There are 4 toilets, each 43 cm high. The cubicles are lockable. The sink height is 80 cm and the toilet paper holder is at 70 cm. The paper towel bin is at a height of 100 cm.
Accessible toilet and baby changing room
There is a door with a 90 cm wide opening. The room is lockable. The toilet seat is 45 cm high. There is 96 cm of free space on the right side of the seat with a support rail, and 60 cm of free space on the left side with a support rail when the changing table is folded against the wall.
There is a changing table at a height of 83 cm and a sink at 80 cm. There is a potty. There is an emergency alarm cord. The locations of toilets are marked on lift and floor maps.

Loan equipment
Visitors can borrow a wheelchair and a baby carrier backpack during their visit. A high chair is available in the café. A magnifying glass and ice grip covers can be borrowed from the customer service desk for use during the visit.
