A digital model of architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s library offers a rare opportunity to step inside the office and library of one of Finland’s most distinguished architects. The interior has now been documented as a 3D model, making these spaces accessible to everyone. Welcome to explore the library!
Explore Pallasmaa’s Library
Juhani Pallasmaa has donated his library of approximately 12,000 volumes to the collection of the Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki. Most of the books remain within easy reach of the 90-year-old architect in his architectural office in Helsinki.
“The digital record created of Pallasmaa’s library preserves and shares the atmosphere, scale, and unique details of this exceptional space long after the physical collection has been transferred to the museum’s holdings. The 3D model opens Pallasmaa’s library to researchers, students, architecture and design enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the cultural history of books and architectural offices,” says Emmi Jouslehto, Chief Technology Officer at the Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki.
The experience is complemented by videos in which Pallasmaa reflects on building his book collection and discusses the significance books have had in shaping his thinking and understanding of architecture. He also speaks about the books, authors, artists, architects, and friends who have influenced his work and worldview.
How does the library work?
The 3D model can be viewed in a web browser, either directly on this page or in a separate window. No additional software or installation is required.
On a computer, use the arrow keys and mouse to navigate through the model. On mobile devices, navigation is controlled via the touchscreen. Begin your journey in the entrance hall of the architectural office and make your way deeper into the spaces. Videos are marked with icons within the model, and all videos include subtitles.
