Summer School Letter

Welcome to the Architecture and Design Museum’s Fill This Space summer school on architecture and the built environment for 16–20-year-olds! This summer school letter contains information and instructions related to the upcoming week. Thank you for reading it carefully. See you next week!

Pre-assignment

My favorite and least favorite place

What is your favorite place like? What about your least favorite place?

Use your own sensory observations (sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste, empathy) to support your presentation of the places. You can use the following guiding questions to support your reflection:

  • How do you feel in these places?
  • What can you do there?
  • What kind of spaces are they (e.g. 5 adjectives)?
  • What kinds of materials are there?
  • Why did you choose this particular place?
  • How would you present your favorite and least favorite place visually to others (e.g. audio recording, photograph, video, drawing)?

Prepare to present your favorite and least favorite place briefly, both verbally and visually, to the rest of the summer school group on the first day. There’s no need to stress about the pre-assignment, you can complete it in a way that suits you.

Materials, equipment, travel and meals

Materials and equipment

Participation in the summer school is free of charge.

The museum provides all necessary materials and equipment for the summer school activities. At the beginning of the course, each participant will receive a sketchbook and a sketching pencil from the museum.

Participants’ own devices may also be used in some activities. This will always be communicated separately.

Some of the activities will take place outdoors, so please come prepared with weather-appropriate clothing and gear for each day. It’s also a good idea to bring sunscreen and a water bottle!

Travel

The Architecture and Design Museum does not cover travel or accommodation costs incurred by attending the summer school. All excursions during the summer school week will take place within the HSL area.

Participants have had the opportunity to apply for a five-day HSL ticket (ABCD) from the museum if they do not have their own travel card or if it is not valid during the summer school. The summer school instructors will distribute the HSL tickets purchased by the museum to those participants who applied for them on the first day of the summer school.

Meals

The Architecture and Design Museum does not cover participants’ meal expenses.

Each summer school day includes a one-hour lunch break, during which participants are expected to bring their own packed lunch. The museum has a refrigerator and a microwave available for use during the summer school week.

On Friday, the museum will provide lunch for the entire summer school group. Dietary requirements and allergy information for the shared lunch have been collected from participants during the application process.

Accessibility and safer space

Accessibility

The accessible entrance to the Architecture and Design Museum is located in the museum’s inner courtyard. The address of the entrance is Ullanlinnankatu 4, 00130 Helsinki.

There is one parking space in the courtyard reserved for visitors. This space is recommended, for example, for museum guests who use a wheelchair. A parking permit for the duration of the visit can be obtained from the customer service desk.

The museum entrance on the Ullanlinnankatu side is accessible. The museum has an accessible elevator. An accessible (barrier-free) toilet is located on the ground floor (floor 0). The museum does not have a hearing loop.

You can find more information about the museum’s accessibility here.

Safer space

Architecture and design belong to everyone.

At the Architecture and Design Museum, we want everyone to have the opportunity for a safe museum experience and to participate as themselves without fear of discrimination or harassment. We are committed to the principles for safer space  in all our activities.

Read more about our principles for safer space here.

Health safety

  • If you are ill or have symptoms of a cold, please do not attend the summer school.
